Manchester Museum has an amazing collection of over 4.5 million objects. Much of the collection is Victorian and was put together with the idea that we could collect lots of different examples of things from around the world. The idea was that the museum would be like an encyclopaedia.
The reality is that collecting one of everything is impossible and is it the best thing to do anyway?
To try and think differently about collecting we have begun to collect objects and supporting material along themes that cut across the long established collections disciplines.
We have called it Thematic Collecting
